This post is for helping people with problems in vertical circular motion!!!

After much heated discussion with KaiYi ......

MUAHAHAHAHA I SAW THE LIGHT! (we both saw it actually)

As one of the ICs of class blog, I decided to put it here to benefit the whole class

In case u wondering wads all that normal reaction force crap --> http://www.physicsforums.com/library.php?do=view_item&itemid=73

A summary of ideas that are 100% true(so you guys can use them as guide instead of cracking ur head over it):

- In case u are wondering why reaction force can be smaller or bigger than mg (it goes against newton's 3rd law), it is because in circular motion, this rule "dosen't" apply(layman terms, actually it does in some way).

- No such thing as centrifugal force

- For Bucket w/ Water, F(c) at top = Mg(pointing down) + Normal(pointing down) = m(v^2/r)

- For different situations, the "2nd" component determining F(c) will vary. (eg Normal reaction, Tension, Gravity ect.) But gravity will always be there.

- All the forces we consider are forces that ACT on the thing eg Gravity, normal reaction force(because its pushing outwards and normal reaction force is keeping it in) not forces that the thing act on other stuff

- Tip on minimum/maximum speed: Minimum speed and Maximum speed only applicable for certain situation. So far the vertical circular motion situations i encountered only either has minimum speed or maximum speed. I haven't met a situation where there is a limit on both.

1. For maximum speed, try this train of thought:

Hypothetical situation for explaining: Car ON top of a hill

Forces on the car: Mg (downwards) , Normal Reaction Force(Upwards)
F(c) = Mg - N = m(v^2/r)

If speed goes up, F(c) has to increase also. But mg is a constant, so N has to become smaller. As N tends towards 0, F(c) = mg. At maximum speed, centripetal force is mg. Now u got the maximum centripetal force, u can calculate maximum velocity[m(v^2/r) remember?]

A bit of extension. Now, what if velocity gets higher than maximum? In order for v to be higher, F(c) must be higher, but it is not possible since mg is constant, therefore because centripetal force is not enough to keep the car in current radius, the car will just start flying like ET :D

2. For minimum speed, try this train of thought

Hypothetical situation to explain: Water + Pail (muahahaha familiar?)

Considering Pail,
Forces at top: Mg(downwards), Tension(downwards)

F(c) = Mg + Tension = m(v^2/r)

The Train of thought(choo choo):
If the velocity is minimum, then the string will be slack(not taut) right? not taut implies that the tension = 0

Therefore F(c) = mg = m(v^2/r)

sub in values then get answer! :D

Considering Water,

Forces on the water at top: Mg(downwards), Normal reaction force(downwards)

F(c) = Mg + N

water at minimum speed in bucket w/o flying out imply that must be barely touching the pail. Which means that normal reaction force is approximately zero (dosen't press on bucket)

Therefore
F(c) = Mg = m(v^2/r)

sub and get speed :D

Hopefully this post is helpful in clarifying those circular motion doubts.

Fyi, the class fund's used to pay up the costs of our notes (eg. Term 1-4 notes), costs for certain events (eg. CNY celeb: yusheng), etcetc things like that.

Chalet starts this Wed to Thur, 2 days 1 night
@Aranda Country Club, next to downtown east pasir ris.
We'll meet at 3.15pm at downtown east, sms/call me or class comm when you reach.

We'll play until ard evening then we'll have our own steamboat! :D
The food'll be provided,
but just in case you eat alot or smth, you shld bring along yr own CUP noodles too!
(Yes noodles in cup, NOT the ones in packets. Strictly no cooking!)
But even if there's not enough, we can still takeaway from downtown east.
Chalet itself costs $160.50 and steamboat food'll be provided,
so pls pay $16 each when you come, pass it to either myself or kim.
(fyi, our class fund's pathetic.)

Hahah we have chalet coming up.

There's gonna be a senior-junior outing on jan 3rd! It's a saturday.
We're meeting up with the juniors at vj at 11 am, then after that we'll head to ecp to cycle, rollerblade, play games, eat lunch, bond, etc etc. (((((:

Hello my dear 14,

I presume all of you are mugging your asses off now. Anyway, something to remind you hungry people!

The majority of the exam days have 2 papers, many of which are spaced less than 1 period apart. These days include:
1. Tuesday - Chinese!
2. Wednesday - LA
3. Thursday - Bio
4. Friday - Maths
5. Wednesday - Physics

Taking into account the short time between papers, the obvious thing to do would be to bring your own food, if you don't want to have to rush down to buy food and be late for the second paper.

Also, do take note that the 3 hours IH core paper on Monday will end at 11.15, therefore remember to EAT BREAKFAST.

Hello One Four! :)

Rmb abt the movie Ms Ngerng shared with us during civics today?
I've found the trailer :]
(And indeed, there's no eye-candy haha :P)

Comical, silly, random the story may be,
but hell yes it's true tt sometimes we may find things losing away from us,
but hey it's also true tt we can actually achieve anything,
everything tt we yearn to have, so long as we put in our very best,
well you know it.

So really, don't give up,
never ever do so.
It sucks, honestly.
And yes, i've to get back to mugging now,
so study very hard and give it a best shot,
let's do this alright 14!

And for a few updates:

1) Pls refer to the notice board for our class list, in case you forget yr index no.

2) And also, I've put up our class duty roster, pls follow it from now onwards. Take it seriously and make an effort to keep our class clean, do not litter regardless of whether it's a sweet wrapper or rough paper. We don't wish for the tchers to nag at us right.

3) No formal lessons on Fri. I've passed around the event outline twice alr, so if any of you still do not know what's gg on for the celebration, approach me to read it. We'll be ordering Mcdonalds' breakfast delivery (15 sets of "hotcakes with sausage" , 15 sets of "big breakfast" ). We're also giving chocos to all our 8 tchers. As our cls fund's running out, all of us've to pay $5 each, pls pass it to Kimberly on Fri.

4) I'm really sorry that i've taken such a long time, but once eoys're over, all of us'll be deciding on both our class tee design and clsrm wall design, which we can carry through until the end of IP2. I'll remind y'all agn when the time comes and hopefully we've a cls discussion then, when lessons wont be so packed. Feel free to approach me if you've any ideas!

Hello all! :)

Firstly, I've set up the sms relay system for our cls,
in which I'll forward the msg to all cls comm members,
whom'll then forward it to rest of the cls.
Basically, I've divided y'all among the 4 cls comm members according to name list.

But 'cos Dom has limited smses to spare,
each of us (cls comm) 'll be helping him, thus forwarding to at least 1 more person,
and hence;

And yes, we'll follow the 2nd system from now onwards okay, to facilitate mass-forwarding of msges!
However, there may be cases whereby a msg's meant not for the entire cls, then I'll be sending it to the ppl involved yup.

1) In prep for Open House, SC's organizing a photo caption comp. Pick a photo tt best describes yr IP life so far & give a caption of what the photo means. Then email it to ip_oh@hotmail.com by Wed 2359h. 3 who send in the best photo-cum-caption, and the cls tt submits the most photos, will stand to win attractive prizes. (Photo captions might even be displayed during Open House!) FYI, more than 1 can be sent per person.

i was cleaning up e classroom in e morning for many mornings. i swept the floor on the day mr lin swept and left those disgusting things at the classroom. it was just how many hours and we generate how much litter already?

your table is not your dumping ground, it is not a place for you to dump your junk like:

- pens
- papers
- drink bottles and cans

remember, there is not cleaner who comes to our class to clear and sweep the floor. we have to do these ourselves. dun wanna do okay, but at least keep where ever you can clean okay?

i dunno if anyone feels the same way as me but i think that we really need to have some sense of responsibility for our classroom. it may not be painted, decorated, furnished, but it is our learning environment for the next 2 years.

i know i'm not the green monitor or anything. but can we start caring for e classroom. i know that our class is considered clean compared to 13. but still, stop littering

Hah, you know Ms Ngerng asked if we had anything to say to the class today?
Well I wanted to say something.
Okay, this will sound kind of corny and weird.
But ya, I really appreciate this class a lot.
As in, super a lot.
As in really really super a lot, to the max.
And I think we really can rise up and shine and be the best class that we can ever be.
It doesn't really matter whether we become the smartest class or not (we must still try to be the smartest), because at the end of the day, as much as academic results are important, results are not the thing we'll remember the most about being in v14.
It's the spirit that we'll have.
It's really inevitable that we'll have conflicts and all but I really hope we can have the courage to solve them to the best that we can.
Ya and I really love all of you people damn super a lot and I really really really value the time we're gonna spend together for the next 2 years.
So yeah, thanks a million for the past three months.
It's been the greatest.

Korea trip

Bad news to all the people who thinks we are really going korea this june holidays.

I've asked ms Ngerng, she says its not true and moreover, if we are really going, they would not have started planning only recently. (cos planning apparently takes a long time)

SO yar, i don't think we're going ): (this thing didnt even exist in the first place! who started this korea thing!)

but its okay, lets start saving money now and go Japan (or wherever we want) for CLASS OUTING next time! : D
